The amount of vehicles on public roads and highways always seems to be steadily increasing. With so many vehicles on a road at any one time and because they are being operated by people, it is understandable that accidents can and do happen.

Over recent years, safety features have made operating vehicles much safer than it used to be. Unfortunately, any type of motor vehicle accident has the potential to cause large amounts of damage both to property and to people. So what should a driver do if they have been involved in an accident?

Seek medical attention

After an accident, the highest priority of everyone involved should be the safety and well being of every person there. If there is a chance that someone was injured, the injured person should get medical attention.

In addition to ensuring their health and safety, having an evaluation by a medical doctor on record after an accident can be extremely helpful in any insurance claims.

Document the scene

If possible, document the scene as well as is possible. Take pictures of the vehicles, any damage and injuries. You should also attempt to get pictures of the area in which the accident took place.

Exchange information

After an accident, you should exchange information with the other people involved. Information includes:

  • Names
  • Phone numbers
  • Email addresses
  • Insurance information
  • License plate numbers
  • The names and badge numbers of any law enforcement officers involved
  • The names and contact information of any witnesses

However, you should be cautious about discussing the event with anyone except for your legal representative, your insurance company and police officers. You should also contact your insurance company soon after the accident takes place.

Keep records

Any documentation you have regarding or related to the accident should be saved and filed and accessible for later use. This includes any receipts, police reports, medical evaluations, repair bills, etc. All of this information can become useful in legal actions and/or insurance claims.

Vehicle accidents can be frightening and stressful events. Attempting to deal with it on your own can be overwhelming. Fortunately, you do not have to do it without help. If you are involved in a motor vehicle accident, it is highly recommended that you get the help of a legal professional who specializes in these types of issues.
