Understanding Social Security Benefits

The Social Security Administration provides benefits to disabled individuals through two programs: Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI). These programs pay benefits to people who cannot work because of a medical condition that is expected to last for over one year or results in death.

SSDI, which is funded through payroll taxes, provides benefits to people based upon tax contributions to the program. To be eligible for this program, applicants must be younger than 65 years of age and have worked for the required amount of time.

SSI provides benefits to people regardless of their work history. Instead, these benefits are provided based upon financial need. Generally, this means that the applicant must have very few assets and a limited income.
